TITLE: BACTERIOPHAGE PREPARATION FOR BIOCONTROL OF VIBRIOSIS APPLICANT: SREE BALAJI MEDICAL COLLEGE & HOSPITAL, BIHER- BHARATH UNIVERSITY ABSTRACT The phage therapy is one of the valuable strategies for the control of bacterial diseases. The present invention demonstrated the occurrence of Vibrio vulnificus lytic phages viz. vv1, vv2, vv3 and vv4, preparation of bacteriophage and its efficacy in phage therapy control of vibriosis. Theselytic phages were shown to cause lysis of various isolates of Vibrio and to have a broad host range lytic spectrum and have potential biocontrol effects of the luminous Vibrio bacteria. Agar bioassay method signified that the percentage inhibition of the Vibrio sp. was 75% (VV1) and 70% (VV2, VV3 & VV4), respectively. One-step growth experiments of the lytic phage infected Vibrio vulnificus showed that the latent period was 3 hrs with the burst size at 37°C. The lytic viruses are tectiviruses of the family tectiviridae having a typical double layered elongated icosahedral head with a tapering tube-like tail. Thus the current study demonstrated the application and efficacy of the Vibrio vulnificus lytic phages against various isolates of the Vibrio bacterial pathogens.
