Disclosed is an intra-mammary teat sealant comprising, in combination: a gel base comprising a glyceride; and a non-toxic metal salt dispersed in the gel base. Further disclosed are a method of forming a physical barrier in the teat canal of a non-human animal for prophylactic treatment of mammary disorders during the animal's dry period and simultaneously preventing black spot defect in dairy products made with milk from the animal, the method comprising: infusing an amount of a teat seal formulation into the teat canal of the animal, wherein the teat seal formulation comprises a non-toxic metal salt, dispersed in a gel phase comprising a glyceride, wherein the amount of the teat seal formulation infused is sufficient to form a physical barrier to entry of microorganisms into the teat canal, and wherein the teat seal formulation does not cause black spot defect in dairy products made with milk from the animal.
