A system and method for supporting a user's arm using a harness configured to be worn on the user's body and an arm support coupled to the harness configured to support the user's arm. Provided, the arm support is configured to follow the movement without substantially interfering with the movement of the user's arm while conforming to the movement of the arm. When the user moves and the arm support unit follows the movement of the user's arm, the arm support unit includes one or more compensation elements for adding a canceling force for at least partially canceling the gravity acting on the arm. The one or more compensation elements may be combined to provide a force profile that varies the cancellation force based on the orientation of the arm support.
