PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing 5-ä4-[2-(5-ethyl-2-pyridyl)ethoxy]benzyl}-2, 4-thiazolidinedione hydrochloride (pioglitazone hydrochloride) of high purity.
SOLUTION: The manufacturing method of pioglitazone hydrochloride includes causing 5-ä4-[2-(5-ethyl-pyridyl)ethoxy]benzyl}-2-imino-4-thiazolidinone (imino isomer) to react with at least one protecting group-introducing agent selected from the group consisting of dialkyldicarbonates and triarylmethyl halides in the presence of a base to prepare a protected compound composed of the imino isomer having introduced a protecting group thereinto, purifying the protected compound, and then causing the purified protected compound to react with hydrogen chloride.
