The invention relates to a method and a device (30) for watering plants by meansof an electronically operating control system. The substrate moisture is measuredat time intervals, and the measured values of a plurality of measurements arestored. The measured values that have been stored are used to identify a trendin the moisture content of the substrate, and this trend is used to adjust a quantityof water to be applied. A number of measurement cycles taking place between twowatering cycles is preferably used to readjust the quantity of water.
