A method comprising obtaining at least one isolated embryo, excising a piece of scutellum or cotyledon tissue from the at least one isolated embryo such that the germination potential of the embryo is not significantly reduced, and analyzing the scutellum or cotyledon tissue sample(s) for the presence or absence of one or more characteristics indicative of at least one genetic trait is provided.
