A refrigerator includes refrigerating compartment 2, storage case 35 provided in refrigerating compartment 2, and light source 13 that is composed of an LED emitting ultraviolet rays, and the temperature of storage case 35 is different from that of refrigerating compartment 2. The ultraviolet rays emitted from light source 13 can inactivate the proliferation of microorganisms deposited on the surface of stored articles or the wall surface of storage case 35. Therefore, it is possible to maintain the hygienic conditions inside switching chamber 6, and delay generation of the discoloration, foul odor, and slime on the surface of food caused by microorganisms. As a result, it is possible to keep the inside of storage case 35 clean at all times, and thus improve the shelf life of food.
