PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an endoscope apparatus optimally emphasizing contrast with respect to respective regions of an image.
SOLUTION: Average values of the luminances of a 11th histogram 71, a 12th histogram 72 and a 13th histogram 73 are expressed by a 11th luminance average value ave1, a 12th luminance average value ave2, and a 13th luminance average value ave3 respectively. The 12th luminance average value ave2 is the same value as an emphasized luminance average value ave4, or the average value of a contrast emphasis histogram 78. The contrast emphasis histogram is translated along the luminance value axis according to the luminance average values. The luminance of each region thus approaches an original luminance value, with the contrast in each region emphasized.
