The invention concerns a method of treating keratin matter such as keratin fibres, comprising the following steps: (i) applying a composition comprising at least a first water-soluble hydrophilic ionic liquid A+X- comprising an organic cation A+； and (ii) applying a composition comprising a soluble hydrophilic salt &Bgr；-Y+ comprising an anion B-, anion B- being such that, by ion exchange with the first ionic liquid A+X-, a second, hydrophobic, ionic liquid A+B- forms. This method of treating keratin matter improves the penetration of cosmetic agents whilst preserving the cosmetic effect.L'invention a pour objet un procédé de traitement des matières kératiniques telles que les fibres kératiniques, qui comprend i) l'application d'une composition comprenant au moins un premier liquide ionique hydrophile soluble dans l'eau A+X- comprenant un cation organique A+ et ii) l'application d'une composition comprenant un sel hydrophile Β-Y+ soluble comprenant un anion B-, l'anion B- étant tel que par échange d'ions avec le premier liquide ionique A+X-, il se forme un second liquide ionique A+B- hydrophobe. Ce procédé de traitement des matières kératiniques permet d'améliorer la pénétration d'actifs cosmétiques tout en conservant un toucher cosmétique.
