A visual attractant device for attracting a target insect such as filth flies, biting flies, wasps or beneficial insects. The visual attractant device may be used to entrap insects for pest control or for luring beneficial insects to a desired area for pollination or similar purposes. The prior art does not take advantage of the natural visual development of target insects. The device includes a substrate 210 having a pixelated pattern portion defined by a plurality of coloured blocks 202 having a characteristic dimension that is within an order of magnitude of the size of the target insect. The plurality of blocks 202 are coloured to be highly reflective in a wavelength range selected to attract the target insect. A background portion 206 is lighter in colour to the pixelated pattern, to contrast sharply therewith to define an irregular edge. The blocks 202 are clustered on the substrate 210 such that most of the plurality of blocks 202 define one or more irregular elongate streaks 204 on the substrate 210. The pixelated pattern may be applied to a strip or to a pillar device, which may be adhesive in order to attract and entrap said target insect to the device, aiding in pest control.
