An agricultural baler (10) includes: a chassis (11); a coupler (70) carried by the chassis (11) and configured for connecting to a power source; a bale forming chamber (20) carried by the chassis (11) and including an apron assembly (40) with at least one chain and a drive roll (48) coupled to the at least one chain and the coupler (70); an apron tensioning system (56) coupled to the at least one chain and configured to control a baling pressure exerted on a bale forming in the bale forming chamber (20); and a bale release (19) coupled to the bale forming chamber (20) and configured to release a fully formed bale (430) from the bale forming chamber (20). A controller (420) is operatively coupled to the apron tensioning system (56) and the bale release (19). The controller (420) is configured to: set a release size of the fully formed bale (430) defining when the fully formed bale (430) is released; receive a power take-off (PTO) power consumption signal or an available power signal; determine a maximum available power based on the received signal; compare the maximum available power to a threshold power; and output a control signal to the apron tensioning system (56) to decrease the baling pressure without changing the release size when the maximum available power is at a predetermined power value, relative to the threshold power.
