The present invention relates generally to systems and methods for preparing,storing, shipping and using skin equivalents made by organotypic culture. Themethodsinclude sterile packaging of the grafts so that the sterility and integrity ofthe package ismaintained until the time of use for grafting purposes. In selectedembodiments, theinvention accordingly provided methods of preserving an organotypicallycultured skinequivalent for use as a wound dressing, involving providing theorganotypically culturedskin equivalent and a package； treating the skin equivalent to provide a non-viable skinequivalent render cells in the skin equivalent non-viable； and packaging saidnon-viableskin equivalent to provide a packaged skin equivalent. The inventionaccordinglyprovides compositions that include an isolated, non-viable, in vitro humanskinequivalent having a dermal layer and stratified squamous epithelium.
