Disclosed is a composition comprising a compound of formula (I) where the substituent R is a sugar derivative as disclosed in the description and either an agriculturally or pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. Examples of compounds of formula (I) include: 3,5,7,9,11,13-Tetradecahexaenoic acid, 2-(2,4-dimethylhexylidene)-14-(3-beta-D-galactopyranosyl-4-hydroxy-2-oxo-2H-pyran-6-yl)-4-methyI (epipyrone A)； 3,5,7,9,11,13-Tetradecahexaenoic acid, 2-(2,4-dimethylhexylidene)-14-(3-alpha-D-galactofuranosyl-4-hydroxy-2-oxo-2H-pyran-6-yl)-4-methyl (epipyrone B) and 3,5,7,9,11,13-Tetradecahexaenoic acid, 2-(2,4-dimethylhexylidene )-14-(3-beta-D-galactofuranosyl-4-hydroxy-2-oxo-2H-pyran-6-yl)-4-methyl (epipyrone C). Also disclosed is a pharmaceutical composition comprising a compound of formula (I)； the use of a compound of formula (I) in the manufacture of a composition and the method of preventing, removing or inhibiting a microbial infection in a plant by applying a composition comprising a compound of formula (I).
