An expandable implant with first and second plates spaced from each other along a first direction. The plates define opposed bone-contacting surfaces, along a first direction, configured to contact superior and inferior vertebral bodies respectively. An actuation member, disposed between the plates, defines a first axis, a first and second end spaced from the first end along a second direction of the axis. The second direction is perpendicular to the first. The implant includes first and second wedges on the actuation member in engagement with the plates and a drive member along a second axis spaced along a third direction, perpendicular to the first direction, along the second and offset from the second direction. The drive member communicates a force to the actuation member causing it to rotate and one of the wedges members to translate along the second direction, in response to rotation, to move one of the plates.
