PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanism for advancing/retracting a footstool, wherein the footstool, which is installed on a front part of a seat of a chair or a massage chair so as to appear/disappear from the lower part of the seat to a nearly horizontal position, can be optionally or automatically extended/contracted in the state of protruding forward.SOLUTION: In the chair which has a backrest 5 and the seat 4 and is provided with the footstool 1 capable of protruding/retreating forward at the front end through an appearing/disappearing mechanism at the front part of the seat 4, the footstool 1 is divided into a first footstool 11 and a second footstool 12. A sliding mechanism 2 is provided between the first footstool 11 and the second footstool 12, so that the first footstool 11 can slide back and forth in front of the seat.
