Apparatus for disinfecting a space using a water-soluble disinfectant, wherein the apparatus comprises a first device 10 for distributing the water-soluble disinfectant in air in the space, preferably an evaporator, and a second device 12 for removing the disinfectant from air. The second device comprises a water reservoir and means for drawing air into contact with the water reservoir. Preferably the second device 12 comprises means for drawing air into the device through an air inlet and preferably the second device comprises paddles located within the water reservoir where the paddles are partially submerged within the water reservoir and move. Ideally the second device 12 comprises a pump for conveying air along the air passageway and rises to an exposed surface of the water reservoir. The apparatus may be capable of being powered by a battery and preferably can be controlled by a remote control 24. The water soluble disinfectant is preferably one of hydrogen peroxide, chlorine, chlorine dioxide, ozone or an inorganic peroxide; ideally a silver-stabilised hydrogen peroxide. The method of using the apparatus is also disclosed.
