A fagot type apparatus and method for relatively safe derma planning for non-technical use is disclosed. The gripping device includes a blade with a safety cage defining an assembly removably mounted to the housing. The safety cage limits the depth of penetration of the blade into the skin, which secures the device for use by non-experts. Various embodiments of a pull type planing device are contemplated.
