Adsorbents include ion exchange systems configured to convert urea into ammonium ions, exchange ammonium ions primarily with hydrogen ions, and exchange Ca, Mg, and K with primarily sodium ions. Soluble sources of sodium ions overcome the initial drop in sodium concentration in the regenerated dialysate.
