The invention relates to a method of repelling birds from an area by utilising the UV light emitted when natural light is incident on a bubble, and to an apparatus for generating bubbles and releasing them into an area from which birds are to be repelled. The apparatus comprises a housing 2 with an air inlet 3 and an outlet 4 for the release of bubbles. A reservoir 5 is located within the housing for holding bubble forming liquid. There is a means for producing a stream of air, optionally a fan 12, and a bubble forming assembly comprising at least one aperture and means for forming a film of bubble forming liquid across the at least one aperture optionally this can be a rotating wheel 8 with a plurality of apertures placed at its circumference. There is a means for controlling the stream of air and the means for forming a film of bubble making liquid across the bubble aperture, or apertures, such that bubbles may be released at predetermined time intervals. A motion detector for controlling when the bubbles are released is optional.
