A coded cartridge holder (200, 300) for use with a drug delivery device (100) is provided. The cartridge holder (200, 300) includes a fastener (212, 216, 308, 310, 402, 404) that becomes operative based in part on a length of a cartridge (120) or a diameter of the cartridge (120). In one embodiment, the cartridge holder (200, 300) is coupled to the drug delivery device (100). The cartridge holder (200, 300) comprises a first blocking feature (202, 204). The drug delivery device (100) includes a cartridge detector (206, 208, 210) comprising a second blocking feature (210). This feature (210) may be a pin (210), for engagement with the first blocking feature (202, 204) of the cartridge holder (200, 300) when the cartridge (120) acts on the cartridge detector (206, 208, 210).
