The present invention relates to a bacteriostatic agent and biocidal formulations, describing a preservative-free bacteriostatic agent containing an aqueous solution of a polyol and a dispersing agent. The polyol/dispersing agent ratio is comprised between 30:1 (weight/weight) and 110:1 (weight/weight). The bacteriostatic agent is used as a diluent in environmentally-friendly biocidal formulations.
