An ablation system (10) for treating atrial fibrillation in a patient, said system comprising: an elongated stem (18) having a proximal end, a distal end and a lumen between them; a housing (16) next to the distal end of the elongated rod; an energy source (12) coupled to the housing and disposed therein, the energy source being adapted to deliver ultrasound energy to a target tissue (276) in order to create an ablation zone (278) in the target tissue that blocks abnormal electrical activity, thereby reducing or eliminating atrial fibrillation in the patient; a sensor; a reflective element (100; 22) operatively coupled with the energy source and adapted to redirect the energy emitted from the energy source in a collimated beam or focused in a desired direction or pattern; a barrier disposed between an energy source face and adjacent blood or tissue, where the barrier allows ultrasound energy to ablate the target tissue without contact between the energy source and the target tissue, and where the barrier comprises a fluid that flows beyond the source of energy to prevent blood from clotting on it; and a processor configured to control a flow of fluid flow based on information received from the sensor.Un sistema de ablación (10) para tratar la fibrilación auricular en un paciente, comprendiendo dicho sistema: un vástago alargado (18) que tiene un extremo proximal, un extremo distal y un lumen entre ellos; un alojamiento (16) junto al extremo distal del vástago alargado; una fuente de energía (12) acoplada al alojamiento y dispuesta en éste, estando adaptada la fuente de energía para suministrar energía de ultrasonidos a un tejido diana (276) a fin de crear una zona de ablación (278) en el tejido diana que bloquee la actividad eléctrica anormal, reduciendo o eliminando así la fibrilación auricular en el paciente; un sensor; un elemento reflectante (100; 22) acoplado operativamente con la fuente de energía y adaptado para redirigir la energía emitida desde la fuente de
