A device100 for retaining a matrix band about at least a portion of a periphery of a tooth 200 to be treated, the device 100 comprising: a first lug to fit on one side of a proximal contact between two teeth, a second lug to fit on the other side of the proximal contact, a resilient body member 101 connecting between the first lug and the second lug, with the body member 101 holding the lugs 110 such that they must be separated to fit over the proximal contact. The body member 101 applies a restorative or clamping force biasing the lugs 110 together against opposed sides of the proximal contact in use. Each of the first and second lugs 110 is pivotally coupled to the resilient body member 101 to allow the resilient body member 101 to rotate relative to the lugs 110 about an axis substantially transverse to a tooth to be treated enabling the resilient body member to rotate between the mesial and distal sides of the tooth in use while providing the clamping force biasing the lugs 110 together.
