A surgical instrument, comprising: an end effector assembly, including: first and second jaw members, at least one of the first or second jaw members movable relative to the other between a spaced-apart position and an approximated position for grasping tissue therebetween, at least one of the first or second jaw members defining an electrically-conductive surface adapted to connect to a source of energy and a knife adapted to connect to a source of energy and selectively translatable relative to the first and second jaw members between a retracted position and an extended position wherein the knife extends between the first and second jaw members, the knife translatable between the retracted and extended positions in each of the spaced-apart and approximated positions of the first and second jaw members, the knife configured for dynamic tissue cutting upon translation of the knife from the retracted position to the extended position with the first and second jaw members disposed in the approximated position, the knife configured for static tissue cutting with the knife disposed in the extended position.
