An animal halter 10 which has a nose band 12 having two ends, a muzzle 30 which is attached to or integral with the nose band, and a lead attachment loop 26 slidably attached to each of the ends of the nose band, wherein in use tension on the lead attachment loop causes the two ends of the nose band to come together and constrict around the nose of an animal. This halter may be for a dog. It may have a neck band 14 with adjustment means for attaching the halter to the animals head. The muzzle may be flexible so as to functionally cooperate with the constriction of the nose band. The halter may have upper 16 and lower 18 cheek straps, a throat strap 22, and a chin strap 24 to hold the nose band in a fixed position relative to the neck band and animal.
