The present invention relates to compositions and methods for the whitening of natural and manufactured teeth without the use of peroxides or abrasives. The active ingredient in the present invention is "actinidin" (crude or purified) and is produced from kiwifruit. The present invention provides for the use of the compositions and methods of the present invention as a tooth whitening agent in a in a strip, tray, floss, dentifrice, rinse, mouthwash or devices like pastilles, chewing gum or lozenges.
