The invention relates to a method for operating a patient monitoring system (10) and a patient monitoring system having a transmission unit (12) that transmits measurement data taken from a patient over a transmission path, and having one or multiple receiver units (14,16) for receiving the measuring data transmitted from the transmission unit, wherein a unique identification code is associated with each transmission unit and receiver unit, and a radio communication for transmitting measurement data is established only if the identification code of the transmission unit is manually confirmed to the respective receiver unit, whereby permanently displayed on the transmission unit is whether a radio communication has been established between one or multiple receiver units, and at which receiver units a radio communication (22) has been established.
