A method for producing picornavirus-like particles (PVLP) in plants is provided. The method includes introducing the first nucleic acid and the second nucleic acid into a plant, a part of a plant, or a plant cell. The first nucleic acid comprises a first regulatory region that is active in a plant operably linked to a nucleotide sequence encoding a picornavirus polypeptide. The second nucleic acid comprises a second regulatory region that is active in a plant operably linked to a nucleotide sequence encoding at least one picornavirus protease. The plant, part of the plant, or plant cell is cultured under conditions permitting the expression of the nucleic acid, thereby producing PVLP.
