The present invention relates to a process for preparing a preparation of a gadolinium metal complex of macrocyclic chelating agent DOTA as a meglumine salt further comprising a small excess of free DOTA. The process uses controlled conditions such that excess gadolinium is present as a precipitate of gadolinium oxide with filtration to remove excessive amount prior to adding a defined excess of DOTA chelating agent. Also provided are methods for preparing MRI contrast agents based on Gd-DOTA.
