Disclosed is the use of a population of isolated human placental stem cells in the manufacture of a medicament for treating ischemia in a subject in need thereof, wherein said stem cells express genes at a detectably higher level than an equivalent number of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs), wherein said genes comprise (i) ELOVL2, ST3GAL6, ST6GALNAC5, or SLC12A8 or (ii) CPA4, TCF21, VTN, B4GALT6, FLJ10781, or NUAK1 or (iii) CD200 wherein at least 70% of said placental stem cells are non-maternal in origin wherein said cells have been passaged at least three times and wherein said cells are not totipotent.
