Blood sampling device 1 comprises lancet body 60 and housing 10 having a fixed abutment lip 25, which holdingly engages the lancet in a primed position against an urging member, e.g. spring 70. Trigger 22 may be formed of the housing wall 20, and deflects a portion of the lancet body transverse to the device’s longitudinal axis, allowing projecting wings 62a, 62b of the lancet body to move past the abutment 25. A safety cap (90, figure 8) may have a frangible connection with the lancet body, concealing the needle, there being no way of deflecting the lancet while connected. The abutment lip 25 may also have a front surface configured to engage the lancet and prevent rearward movement from the lancing position to the primed position.
