An absorbent article that prevents back flow and that uses cotton fibers in the surface sheet thereof, wherein the water retention of the surface sheet is reduced as much as possible. An incontinence pad (1) having at least a medium volume for absorbing at least 20cc of urine, wherein a surface sheet (3) is formed by coating, with a water-repellent, a spunlace non-woven fabric comprising 100wt% of cotton fibers. In planar view of the incontinence pad (1), recessed lines (20, 21) in a rhomboid lattice-shaped pattern are formed in the skin-facing surface side, the recessed lines (20, 21) comprising first recessed lines (20) that extend along the direction of a prescribed angle of inclination, and that are formed at fixed intervals in the longitudinal direction of the incontinence pad (1), and second recessed lines (21) that extend along the direction of an angle of inclination obtained by inverting, on the longitudinal direction line of the incontinence pad (1) and in the widthwise direction of the incontinence pad (1), the angle of inclination of the first recessed lines (20), and that are formed at fixed intervals in the longitudinal direction of the incontinence pad (1). Rhomboid lattice-shaped defined regions (22), which are defined by the recessed lines (20, 21), are disposed adjacent to each other in the longitudinal direction and widthwise direction of the incontinence pad (1). A plurality of openings (10), which penetrate the incontinence pad (1) from the front to the rear thereof, is formed in at least a section (H) corresponding to an excretory opening.
