The seeding machine (10) comprising: a main frame (14) a row unit (18, 118) coupled to the main frame (14), the row unit (18, 118) having a row unit frame (30, 130), a gauge wheel (132) coupled to the row unit frame (30, 130), and a furrow opener (134) coupled to the row unit frame (30, 130) and a downforce adjustment system (142) for adjusting an amount of downforce applied to the row unit (18, 118), the downforce adjustment system (142) including a moisture sensor (166) configured to detect a moisture level of soil, a controller (162) configured to receive a signal from the moisture sensor (166) corresponding to the detected moisture level, and an actuator (146) configured to change the amount of downforce applied to the row unit (18, 118) based on the signal received by the controller (162).
