A method for inducing an immune response of an individual to Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV). In some instances, this immune response is a prophylactic immune response that inhibits or prevents MERS-CoV infection in an individual. Recombinant MERS-CoV polypeptides and nucleic acid molecules encoding the same are also provided. In addition, neutralizing antibodies specifically binding to the MERS-CoV S protein and antigen binding fragments thereof are also disclosed.
