In a complex, multi-processor software controlled system (10), such as protonbeam therapy system (PBTS), it may be important to provide treatmentconfigurable parameters (80, 82) that are easily modified by an authorizeduser to prepare the software controlled systems for various modes ofoperation. This particular invention relates to a configuration managementsystem (54) for the PBTS (10) that utilizes a database (72) to maintain dataand configuration parameters (80, 82) and also to generate and distributesystem control files (56) that can be used by the PBTS (10) for treatmentdelivery. The use of system control files (56) reduces the adverse effects ofsingle point failures in the database (72) by allowing the PBTS (10) tofunction independently from the database (72). The PBTS (10) accesses thedata, parameters, and control settings from the database (72) through thesystem control files (56), which insures that the data and configurationparameters (80, 82) are accessible when and if single point failures occurwith respect to the database (72).
