The present invention relates to a composition for preventing or treating metabolic diseases, and more specifically, to a pharmaceutical composition and a food composition for preventing, alleviating, or treating metabolic diseases, comprising Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix extract as an effective component. A method of the present invention promotes AMPK activity； suppresses fat accumulation, lipid droplet, activity of SREBP-1c, which is a lipid synthesis-related transcription factor, and expression of lipogenic enzymes； reduces a body weight； and reduces the content of fat tissue, blood sugar, triglycerides, and cholesterol, and thus may be beneficially used in the prevention or treatment of metabolic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, hypertriglyceridemia, and hypercholesterolemia.본 발명은 대사성 질환 예방 또는 치료용 조성물에 관한 것으로, 보다 상세하게는 진교 추출물(Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix)을 유효성분으로 포함하는 대사성 질환 예방, 개선 또는 치료용 약학적 조성물 및 식품 조성물에 관한 것이다.본 발명의 방법은 AMPK 활성을 촉진시키고, 지방 축적, 지방 과립, 지방합성전사인자 SREBP-1c 활성 및 지방합성효소 발현을 억제하고, 체중, 지방조직, 혈당, 중성지방 및 콜레스테롤 함량을 감소시켜 비만, 당뇨, 고중성지방혈증, 고콜레스테롤 혈증 등의 대사성 질환을 예방하거나 치료하는 데에 유용하게 이용될 수 있다.
