Systems and methods for suturing tissue are provided. The elongate deployment shaft supports a needle deployment assembly with a needle that carries the suture material and a stabilizing device that is reconfigurable between a non-expanded insertion profile and an expanded profile. A catcher tube on the shaft having a catcher at the distal end can hold at least a portion of the needle carrying the suture material when the needle is engaged with the catcher through the tissue to be sutured. When expanded, the sheath on the catcher tube can pinch the tissue to be sutured against the stabilization device. The first actuator moves the catcher tube distally with respect to the shaft to reduce the distance between the proximal end of the stabilizer and the distal end of the stabilizer and expand the stabilizer. And the sheath can be moved distally relative to the shaft to pinch the tissue. The second actuator deflects the needle radially outward and moves proximally to pass the tissue to be sutured and engage the catcher, after which each portion not held by the catcher is moved.
