There is provided a method of treating a soft or hard capsule shell to reduce or alleviate stress within the capsule shell. The method comprises heating at least a portion of the soft or hard capsule shell for a time sufficient to reduce the internal stress of the capsule shell to a temperature that is higher than the glass transition temperature of the capsule shell but below the melting temperature of the capsule shell.
