An apparatus for application of a composition to a surface, the apparatus comprising: receptacle(s) for all component(s) of the composition in one or multiple parts； an applicator pad configured for dispensing the composition onto the surface； and at least one integrated light source operable to illuminate the surface while the surface is contacted with the applicator pad. Methods for using the apparatus include a method for disinfecting a skin surface wherein the composition is an antimicrobial skin prep solution comprising at least one fluorescing agent and the at least one integrated light source operates to visually evaluate coverage of the skin prep solution
