A chronically implanted medical device, connected to a medical electrical lead that includes a sensor, is used to detect heart rate. Electrical stimulation is delivered proximate aortic arch tissue of a patient in order to reduce a patients heart rate. Electrical stimulation is terminated after a determination is made that continued electrical stimulation does not provide a beneficial heart rate effect to the patient.
