In order to care for subjects in acute care environment, the present invention relates to a method for using lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2, (Lp-PLA2). In particular, it is possible to determine whether the benefit from treatment in acute care environment, subjects with vascular events such as heart attack or stroke, using the Lp-PLA2. Moreover, by evaluating in combination with other evaluation methods alone or in Lp-PLA2 levels, the present invention relates to a method for assessing the severity and risk of stroke. The invention further relates to methods of using the Lp-PLA2 to predict the functional outcome in subjects with vascular events such as stroke or heart attack.
