A method and apparatus for controlling and calibrating an end effector is described. The method may include detecting a signal in response to movement of the first tube relative to the second tube, wherein the first tube drives movement of a clamp arm of the end effector. The method may further include, based on the signal, determining a clamp arm position of the end effector relative to the ultrasonic blade of the end effector.
