The present invention consists of an ethanolic extract from the Rumex hymenosepalus plant which exhibits high antihyperglycemic activity, which reduces blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, in half the time in which the traditional glibenclamide drug performed it, according to the tests carried out. The method of obtaining the extract consists of providing the roots of the plant and depositing them in an aqueous ethanol solution, for after 15 days of filtering it. According to the tests performed, with the compound obtained it is possible to develop a future treatment for diabetes, low- cost and efficient.La presente invención consiste en un extracto etanólico de la planta Rumex hymenosepalus que exhibe alta actividad antihiperglucemiante, el cual reduce los niveles de glucosa en la sangre en pacientes con diabetes mellitus tipo 2, en la mitad del tiempo en que lo hace el medicamento convencional glibenclamida, de acuerdo con las pruebas realizadas. El método de obtención del extracto consiste en proporcionar las raíces de la planta y depositarlas en una solución de etanol acuosa, para después de 15 días filtrarla. De acuerdo con las pruebas realizadas, con el compuesto obtenido es posible elaborar un futuro tratamiento para la diabetes, de bajo costo y eficiente.
