Provided is an animal repellant which comprises as an active ingredient a compound which emits an odor which causes an innate fear among animals to which animals will not become accustomed. Said animal repellent comprises at least one of the following as an active ingredient: a heterocyclic compound shown in general formula 1 or a salt thereof a straight chain sulfide compound or an alkyl isothiocyanate. In general formula 1 ring A represents a 3 to 7 membered heterocycle which comprises at least one of the following heteroatoms: nitrogen sulfur or oxygen. R and R each independently represent hydrogen a halogen atom an alkyl group which may be substituted an alkoxy group which may be substituted an acyl group a carboxyl group which may be esterified a thiol group which may be substituted or an amino or oxo group which may be substituted.
