The illumination optical system contains a light source and is formed to irradiate an eye to be examined. The photographic optical system comprises an image sensor and photographs the eye irradiated by the illumination optical system. The optical member insertion and removal unit inserts an optical member into one or more optical paths of the illumination optical system and the photographic optical system or removes the optical member from one or more optical paths. The notifying unit notifies the insertion or removal of the optical member based on a signal outputted from the image sensor.
