Sugarless hard coating process comprises applying a coating syrup containing at least one polyol, where the polyol is obtained by hydrogenation of disaccharide and the coating syrup has a dry content of 60-90 wt.%, preferably 70-85 wt.%, and drying the obtained product using air at a temperature of 40-70[deg] C for a period of at least one minute to more than 5 minutes, where the sugarless hard coating has a smoothing rate of greater than 25%, preferably greater than 32%.
