The present invention addresses the problem of providing a brain function-improving composition for newborns, particularly newborns who are just after birth. According to the present invention, a brain function-improving agent for newborns is provided, which comprises a lactic acid bacterium and/or a bifidobacterium. When a brain function-improving agent for newborns or a brain function-improving composition for newborns according to the present invention is used, it becomes possible to improve the developmental quotient without causing any adverse side effects. This use is advantageous from the viewpoint of the effective development and growing of newborns.
