An embodiment of the present invention relates to an electrosurgical instrument comprising first, second, and ground cables, a hand piece, and a ground electrode pad. More specifically, the electrosurgical instrument further comprises: a mode control unit which generates a mode control signal corresponding to an operation mode that an operator desires； a high frequency generator which generates a high frequency output signal based on a waveform condition and setting of a voltage and a current which are specified by the mode control signal, and which outputs the generated high frequency output signal in a signal output terminal； a switching unit which sets a connection relationship between the signal output terminal of the high frequency generator and each of the first and second cables, and a connection relationship between a ground terminal of the high frequency generator and each of the second and ground cables, in accordance with the mode control signal； and an overcurrent protection unit which is inserted into a closed circuit to which the high frequency output signal is transmitted, which obtains a waveform of sensing current for tracking a current waveform of the high frequency output signal, and which analyzes the waveform of the obtained sensing current to electrically disconnect a line to which the high frequency output signal is transmitted, if the waveform of the obtained sensing current is greater than that of a set overcurrent. Here, the first and second cables are connected commonly to the hand piece in a bipolar mode and a unipolar mode, thereby constituting the closed circuit for transmitting the high frequency output signal to the hand piece in the high frequency generator through the switching unit.
