A method of treating a disease or disorder associated with the loss of neuronal cells in the brain, said method comprising: a) obtaining at least one stem cell from human spinal cord tissue； b) growing at least one stem cell to form an expanded population stem cells； and c) administering a therapeutically effective amount of an expanded stem cell population to at least one region of the subject's brain. The method of claim 1, wherein the expanded stem cell population differentiates into neurons that integrate in vivo into the brain of the subject. The method of claim 1, wherein the disease or disorder is caused by ischemia, hemorrhage and brain injury. The method of claim 3, wherein the disease or disorder comprises paralysis, impaired speech, loss of memory, or comprehension.
