The invention provides compositions for improving kidney function comprising akidney function improving amount of one or more antioxidants and a reducedamount of protein and/or phosphorus as compared to the maximum amount ofprotein and phosphorus typically recommended for a healthy animal of the samespecies or breed and methods for improving kidney function comprisingadministering such compositions to an animal susceptible to or suffering fromkidney disease or impaired kidney function. In a preferred embodiment, thecomposition is a food composition useful for improving kidney function.
